How to Choose a T-BOX? 4G, CAN, and Relay Output Compared
A T-BOX (telematics terminal) is the "eyes and hands" of construction equipment IoT. Pick the wrong model and you either lack features or overspend on configs you never use. The key is not the priciest model — it's what your equipment must collect and control. This guide uses three JGY T-BOX models to break down the three core dimensions: 4G, CAN, and relay output.
Three Dimensions of T-BOX Selection
1. Connectivity: Why 4G Wins
Construction IoT data is small, frequent, low-latency — position every second, working-condition frames every tens of seconds, occasional remote commands. In this profile:
- 2G: Networks are being sunset; avoid for new projects.
- 4G CAT4/CAT6: Overkill bandwidth, higher module cost and power, poor value.
- 4G: Good coverage, low cost, low power, with 10Mbps down / 5Mbps up — more than enough. The current first choice for construction gear.
The entire JGY T-BOX line uses 4G全网通, ensuring long-term supplyability and maintainability.
2. CAN Bus Channels: How Much Working-Condition Data You Can Read
CAN is the bridge between the T-BOX and the equipment controller. Without CAN, a T-BOX is just a GPS tracker. CAN lets you read:
- Engine RPM, coolant temp, fuel level
- Working hours, service intervals
- Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and alerts
- Hydraulic pressure, boom/lift status
Construction CAN baud rates are typically 125k/250k/500k; the T-BOX must auto-adapt to all three.
3. Relay Output: Whether You Can Lock Remotely
Relay output (DO) is the T-BOX's "hand" on the hardware. With it, platform commands can:
- Cut fuel (diesel solenoid valve)
- Cut power (starter circuit)
- Auto-lock on contract expiry — core to rental risk control
If you run a rental business, relay output is mandatory — otherwise risk control is impossible.
Comparing the Three T-BOX Models
JGY T-BOX comes in three versions for different complexity levels:
| Feature | YOOAI-GC-DT-CTF (Enhanced) | YOOAI-GC-DT-CAN (Standard) | YOOAI-GC-DT-CL (Lite) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | 4G 全网通 | 4G 全网通 | 4G 全网通 |
| Positioning | GPS+BeiDou+GLONASS+GALILEO | same | same |
| CAN channel | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Relay output | Yes | No | No |
| AD sampling | Yes | No | No |
| ACC input | Yes | No | No |
| Bluetooth | Yes | Optional | No |
| WiFi | Optional | No | No |
| FOTA upgrade | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Note: The "YOOAI" prefix in model numbers is a historical naming convention for JGY hardware; the product belongs to JGY (Guangzhou Youan Information Technology Co., Ltd.).
Pick by Use Case
Case 1: Rental business (must lock remotely) The enhanced YOOAI-GC-DT-CTF is the only choice. Full relay output + ACC input + AD sampling, combined with the platform, enables expiry-based remote lock, electronic-fence breach alerts, and working-condition-based billing.
Case 2: OEM condition monitoring (no locking) The standard YOOAI-GC-DT-CAN is enough. 1 CAN channel for conditions + Bluetooth for local config + FOTA — high value. Suited to OEMs doing after-sales monitoring without rental risk control.
Case 3: Positioning and basic data only The lite YOOAI-GC-DT-CL fits budget-sensitive scenarios needing only location and hours — logistics vehicles, simple asset tracking.
Hardware Details You Cannot Ignore
- Wide voltage 9–36V: Compatible with 12V/24V systems — essential for construction vehicles.
- Operating temp -20°C to +70°C: Stable in northern winters and desert summers.
- Protection: ESD, surge, electrical fast transient — for harsh construction electrical environments.
- Ear-mount installation: 116.5×122×38mm footprint saves in-cabin space.
- Configuration: Local serial, Bluetooth, or remote platform — balancing field debugging and remote ops.
Selection Checklist
- Need remote lock? Yes → Enhanced CTF
- Need CAN conditions but no lock? Yes → Standard CAN
- Only need positioning? Yes → Lite CL
- Need Bluetooth local config or WiFi backhaul? Yes → Pick the corresponding option on CTF or CAN
Pick the right T-BOX, and device management, electronic fences, and FOTA upgrades all work end-to-end. For full specs, visit the T-BOX CTF detail page, or contact us for samples.
